Zofran Lawsuits for Cleft Palates

When most people hear reports of babies with a cleft palate, they think of babies born in third world countries or moms who smoked or during pregnancy or moms with diabetes. It is heart wrenching to discover that your child will be born with a birth defect caused by a prescription drug.

Research studies have been conducted by scientists on moms who use Zofran, and the results are alarming. Studies have shown that they mothers who use Zofran have a much higher risk in giving birth to a baby with a cleft palate than moms with diabetes or moms who smoke.

The Zofran and Cleft Palates Debate

Opposers of the Zofran debate claim that Zofran does not cause birth defects. Apparently, they are blind to the fact that it has been medically proven (on multiple occasions) that this drug is harmful to pregnant women.

Back in 1991 Zofran was promoted by drug manufacturers GlaxoSmithKline as an unsafe prescription drug for pregnant women. GlaxoSmithKline failed to place warning labels on their drug. Since the discovery, there have been reports issued that mothers have given birth to babies with this defect. What is ironic is that these mothers did not have a family history of this disorder. Diabetes and smoking were ruled out.

There have been proven studies that has concluded that Zofran increases the probability of a baby developing a cleft palate (and other defects) during the first trimester of a pregnancy.

What is a Cleft Palate Birth Defect?

A cleft palate (or cleft lip) is when a baby suffers from a facial abnormality while he/she is developing in a mother’s womb. The lip lacks a sufficient amount of tissue that combines the lip together in a proper way. So, it is separated or split in the middle of the lip, forming an open gap.

What is Zofran Used For?

Zofran also referred to as Ondansetron, is a prescription drug used to help eliminate or reduce vomiting and nausea (or morning sickness)!during pregnancy. This powerful drug is normally used as a prescription for patients with cancer patients to help eliminate the nausea caused by surgery, radiation and chemo.
